CANDACE’S TOP FIVE CHARLOTTESVILLE RESTAURANTS

I love how Charlottesville has become such an amazing food town. I enjoy dining out and recommending my favorite restaurants to my friends and my guests at The Inn At Court Square! While living in Charlottesville or visiting this fabulous city, I hope you have a chance to experience some of my favorite restaurants!

The Inn At Court Square

Enjoy wine dinners with Chef Jim in a warm intimate atmosphere in the oldest house downtown. Join us for our next wine dinner January 28th for an exceptional dinner experience. We will also be serving an amazing dinner during Valentine’s weekend, February 11th through the 14th. Also you can enjoy Chef Jim’s wonderful lunches Monday through Friday. My favorite lunch specials are Jim’s lobster salad and his house-made BBQ.

Alley Light

A short walk from the Inn At Court Square, you will find a hidden jewel in an alley at 108 2nd Street S.W. Just look for the light over the door, because there is no sign to let you know you are in the right place. I love to start with Cauliflower Gratin and the Tuna Carpaccio. The Pork Belly and Potted Shrimp are a must too! The desserts are always fabulous! Will, Chris, and their wonderful staff always take great care of me and my guest, but please be sure to make a reservation!

Tavola

Located in the Belmont neighborhood, at 826 Hinton Avenue, you will find a small Italian restaurant. Tavola is just a short distance from The Inn At Court Square and a favorite to locals. I have been enjoying Tavola since the first day Michael Keaveny opened his doors! The specials are always outstanding but I usually order the Burrata to start and then the Seared Scallops over beet-leek risotto. Everything is so fabulous and worth the wait!
Mas Tapas

Mas is a Spanish tapas restaurant located at 904 Monticello Avenue, just a block from Tavola and a short walk or drive from The Inn At Court Square. I love the bacon wrapped figs, smoked fire roasted tomatoes, and the large, crispy prawns. Everything is so tasty, but those are just a few of my favorites things that chef Thomas Rahal creates!

The Downtown Grill

Located on the downtown walking mall and just a short walk from The Inn At Court Square is our most classic steak and seafood restaurant. I always enjoy the wedge salad, the Seared Sushi grade Sesame Crusted Tuna, and then I can’t leave until I have their delicious creme brulee! Robert, Michael, and their staff are always so wonderful to my family and my inn guests! My family usually enjoys the bar for drinks and dinner!

Chef Jim McCullough Comes Home To The Inn At Court Square

My new Chef Jim jokes that he took theater in school, but quickly found out he was a bad actor but a really good waiter. Actually, Jim quips, he’s a pretty good actor as well, which is easy to believe when you see Jim interact with diners and introduce menus.
Jim got his start in the restaurant business at The Inn at Little Washington and Four and Twenty Blackbirds, where he worked with two of the best chefs in the world. He learned patience, kindness, and a good attitude, as well as to pursue excellence, from the influence of Patrick O’Connell and Heidi Morf. While these mentors may top his resume, Jim’s first teachers were his mom and grandmother, and Jim takes pride in dubbing himself “mother taught.” His mom, Daphne Hutchinson, loves food and cooking, and Jim describes most family events as centering on cooking for fun. He still describes himself as “playing in the kitchen,” and this love of experimentation gives his food an adventurous twist.

Jim’s sense of adventure comes through in his second passion: travel. Looking for a way to combine his passion for cooking and desire to see the world, Jim decided to cook on cruise ships. He has traveled all over the world cooking for small cruises, including some run by National Geographic. He has worked in many different venues, from large ships to smaller private yachts. Some of his favorite destinations include Alaska, the Caribbean, Australia, and Cuba. Jim’s cooking reflects his world travels in its interesting flavors, diversity, and wide-ranging palette. He is also rumored to make a mean mojito that native Cubans claim is the best around.

Jim owned a restaurant in Northern Virginia called the Blue Rock Inn. It won awards, Zagget ratings, and AAA ratings. It was also selected by Northern Virginia Magazine as one the top eight romantic getaways from Washington, D.C.
Jim recently decided to stop traveling as much so that he could stay close to his mom. And we are so lucky he did! Jim decided to take the job I offered him at The Inn at Court Square because he loves the atmosphere and look of my Inn. Like me, he appreciates the intimacy of a small inn and loves interacting with guests. After a mere three weeks, Jim says he feels like he is among family—and the feeling is mutual.

During his first week, Jim put on a delicious dinner party for my friends and family. The four-course meal featured Moroccan rack of lamb or sesame ginger crusted tuna, flourless chocolate torte, and carefully chosen wines for each course. On New Year’s Eve, Jim did his first private party for 24. The guests were treated to a five-course meal that featured salmon mousse canapé, lobster tail, jicama salad, filet mignon or crab cakes, and white chocolate crème brulee. Each course included a specially chosen wine as well. Upon tasting the dessert, one guest was overheard saying “I could eat twelve of these!” We are so thrilled to have a chef who is passionate about food and who wants to explore new possibilities at The Inn At Court Square. His upcoming projects include revitalizing our lunch menu by adding new dishes, holding monthly wine dinners, and running private parties and special events at the Inn. Keep your eyes peeled for Chef Jim’s creative food adventures at The Inn At Court Square! We can’t wait to see what he does next! I am so thrilled to have Chef Jim McCullough come to my home to The Inn At Court Square!

MOM

Is there a person or place that defines who you are? Someone or someplace that lies at your core and seems to color much of what you do, think, and feel? For me those are family and Savannah, Georgia, my hometown.

I come from a close-knit family that loves to laugh, eat, socialize, and travel, all the while driving each other a little bit crazy! But the little bit of crazy is what makes my life so fun! My parents, Ray and Carleen, instilled important values in my older brother, Michael, and me, values like honesty, kindness, hard work, thoughtfulness, generosity, and bravery. My parents also taught me to appreciate beautiful things, enjoy life, and do what I love.

My mom, Carleen, is 87 years old (but usually acts about 37!) and lives with me at The Inn at Court Square, where she has her own room across from the dining room—in other words, right in the thick of things, which is exactly where she likes to be! Born and raised in Georgia, mom was a Fine Arts major at the University of Georgia, and that love of performance emerges all the time. Mom loves to socialize, cheer for the UGA football, watch me play tennis (more on that later), sip her cocktails, ride around the Downtown Mall on her motorized scooter, and eat out. In general, she likes to see and be seen!

If you want a table in a totally booked-up restaurant, a seat in a full movie theater, or a drink in a busy bar, travel with my mom because somehow she always gets special treatment. One evening, six of us went to one of mom’s favorite Charlottesville restaurants, only to find that there was a two hour wait for a table. The hostess was about to add our names to the long list of hopeful diners when the owner walked up and said “Wait a minute.” Within five minutes, she was leading us to a table and chatting away with mom, who was already making eye-contact with the bartender. My friends were agog and couldn’t stop talking about dining with the “Queen.” Mom just laughs and talks to all the people in the restaurant like they are old friends.

No one can quite figure out how she charms people the way she does, but wherever we go, people remember mom and treat her like royalty. Of course, the downside for me is that mom expects to be treated the same way at the Inn…more on that and that “little bit of crazy” I was talking about later…
